Appaloosa

The existence of the Appaloosa breed can be almost entirely attributed to the Nez Perce Indians of Washington, Oregon and Idaho. The 18th Century Nez Perce prized the intelligence, speed, and flashy color of Appaloosa type horses, and were the first tribe in America to breed selectively for those traits. When Europeans began to settle the Nez Perce's native Palouse region, they named the colorful spotted horses "Palouse horses." Over time, the name evolved to become "Appaloosa."
