American Saddlebred
The American Saddlebred is widely considered to be America's oldest native breed. The first Saddlebreds were a mixture of Thoroughbred, Narraganset, and Pacer breeds, and were a result of an 18th Century breeding program designed to produce and sensible, adaptable, smooth-riding breed. Saddlebreds have been shown as performance horses for more than 150 years. Today, the Saddlebred is one of the most popular American breeds, and is known in particular for its animated, high-stepping gaits.
